Automated License Plate Readers- ACLU of Southern California & EFF v. LAPD & LASD

EFF and the ACLU of Southern California each sent California Public Records Act requests to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department seeking documents about each agency's use of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) systems—sophisticated cameras mounted on squad cars and street poles that read license plates and record the time, date, and location a particular car was encountered.

SB 467: California's Email Privacy Bill

California State Senator Mark Leno has introduced important new legislation that protects email privacy. Senate Bill 467, sponsored by EFF, requires state law enforcement agencies to obtain a warrant before asking service providers to hand over a private citizen's emails.

Doe v. Harris

The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU-NC) and EFF filed a federal class-action lawsuit to block implementation of unconstitutional provisions of Proposition 35 – a ballot measure passed by California voters that restricts the legal and constitutionally protected speech of all registered sex offenders in California.

California Location Privacy Act of 2012

Police shouldn’t be able to get your sensitive location data – information that can reveal your religion, health, hobbies, and politics – on a whim. That’s why EFF and the ACLU of Northern California are sponsoring California Senate Bill 1434, the Location Privacy Act, which would ensure law enforcement obtains a warrant before acquiring a person’s location information from an electronic device like a cell phone.
