Protect the Protest: San Francisco Launch Panel

September 5, 2018 - 4:00pm
San Francsico, CA

EFF civil liberties director David Greene will participate in a panel hosted by Greenpeace that includes speakers from Wikimedia, Rainforest Action Network, Techdirt, and more.

A coalition of 20 civil liberties and environmental rights groups are launching a new effort to fight back against lawsuits aimed at stifling the free speech rights of writers, activists, nonprofits, and organizations. "Protect the Protest" brings together EFF, ACLU, Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, Human Rights Watch, and many more to raise awareness about strategic lawsuits against public participation, called SLAPPs.

Attend a panel that includes EFF civil liberties director David Greene, Greenpeace executive director Annie Leonard, Rainforest Action Network director of communications Christopher J. Herrera, and Wikimedia legal counsel Jacob Rogers to discuss the importance of SLAPPs. Other speakers will include those affected by SLAPPs, including TechDirt founder and CEO Mike Masnick, Water for the Citizens of Weed CA active SLAPP defendant Jim Taylor, active SLAPP defendant, and Friends of the Big Bear Valley, Fawnskin, CA former SLAPP defendant Sandy Steers.

This panel takes place on a working vessel called the Arctic Sunrise, which will be docked in San Francisco.  There is a steep and narrow gangway to cross in order to board the ship. Please remember that there is inherent instability to a ship in water, and there will be steep stairs involved. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. Service animals allowed on the ship.
