Explicitly Art or Sexually Explicit?
The Vulva Gallery is an educational project aimed at creating awareness of the diversity of women's bodies. Creator Hilde Atalanta (who uses "they/them" pronouns) accepts submissions in the form of photographs, then recreates them as paintings in an effort to comply with Instagram's rules. Nonetheless, Instagram deleted The Vulva Gallery for 24 hours in 2018, presumably on the basis of the company's strict policies around nudity and sexual content.
Fortunately, the account was reinstated, and Atalanta received an apology and a verification checkmark. Unfortunately, many users haven't been so lucky, and as Instagram cracks down on sexually explicit content, we'll be sure to see more takedowns.
