MediaJustice (not EFF) will host this event during Oakland Tech Week. EFF Executive Director Nicole Ozer will be speaking at "Building Beyond Big Tech: Organizing Oakland's Future."

Oakland is being shaped by overlapping forces: the expansion of surveillance tech, growing corporate influence over public policy, and Silicon Valley's exported ideologies regarding technology and its core purpose.
During Oakland Tech Week, MediaJustice will bring together organizers, movement technologists, and journalists for a half-day strategy gathering to explore the terrain of technology and power in California, and what to do about it. Alongside movement partners at Electronic Frontier Foundation and Upturn, we will spend an afternoon examining who is driving the region’s tech agenda, where money and political power are moving, and how organizers can intervene.
This gathering is designed as a space to connect local fights, develop intersectional analysis, and strengthen the relationships needed for coordinated action across Oakland and the region toward community-controlled alternatives.

About the Speaker:
Nicole Ozer is EFF's Executive Director leading cutting-edge law and policy to advance rights, justice, and democracy and is a legal expert on artificial intelligence, privacy and surveillance, and digital speech.
Before becoming Executive Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation in June 2026, she had launched the Center for Constitutional Democracy at UC Law San Francisco as its Inaugural Executive Director and earlier was the founding Director and longtime leader of the Technology and Civil Liberties Program at the ACLU of Northern California.
Nicole was also a Technology and Human Rights Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School, a Fellow at the Stanford Digital Civil Society Lab, a Visiting Researcher at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, and an intellectual property attorney at Morrison & Foerster LLP in San Francisco.
