DIG (Documentaries Investigations Journalism) Festival (not EFF) will host this event. EFF Director of Cybersecurity Eva Galperin will be on the panel, "The Made in Italy of Digital Surveillance and Spyware."

Italy ranks among the most advanced countries in the production of digital surveillance software, particularly spyware—programs capable of infiltrating devices to intercept both in-transit and stored communications on phones and computers. This market remains largely opaque: a tangled web of governments, intelligence agencies, manufacturing companies, export intermediaries, and end-users whose boundaries and true scope are difficult to trace, both in Italy and abroad. Where and against whom Italian spyware is deployed remains a question without a clear answer. Instead, what is growing is the number of documented cases of abuse: covert surveillance operations that are never traced back to any responsible party, frequently directed against journalists. This panel attempts to bring order to what we know about these tools—which represent one of the most severe authoritarian threats to press freedom—and to measure the true depth of our country's involvement.

About the Speaker:
Eva Galperin is EFF's Director of Cybersecurity. Prior to 2007, when she came to work for EFF, Eva worked in security and IT in Silicon Valley and earned degrees in Political Science and International Relations from SFSU. Her work is primarily focused on providing privacy and security for vulnerable populations around the world. To that end, she has applied the combination of her political science and technical background to everything from organizing EFF's Tor Relay Challenge, to writing privacy and security training materials (including Surveillance Self Defense and the Digital First Aid Kit), and publishing research on malware in Syria, Vietnam, Lebanon, and Kazakhstan. Since 2018, she has worked on addressing the digital privacy and security needs of survivors of domestic abuse. She is also a co-founder of the Coalition Against Stalkerware.

Since 2015 years, we have been organizing DIG Festival, that has become an international point of reference for journalists devoted to investigations and reportage. Since 2020 our Festival takes place in Modena, while previously it was held in Riccione.
