Join us Tuesday for the third in our At Home With EFF series of livestreamed chats, followed by Q&As! This At Home With EFF also coincides with Giving Tuesday Now, a global day of support. For each of these panels, we’ll highlight the considerations of nonprofits and mutual aid organizing groups doing work to support communities.

In the first segment, we’ll cover security and privacy considerations for mutual aid organizers. In the second segment, we’ll go over our coalition work with hundreds of nonprofits in fighting the sale of the .ORG registry, and what nonprofits, and web users, need to know about this fight. We’ll also have a magical guest during one of our intermissions.

Event Schedule:

2:00-2:30: Practicing Safe Online Organizing During the Pandemic

Communities across the country are stepping up to self-organize mutual aid groups, uniting virtually to offer and coordinate support to those who are in need. In solidarity with the need for physical distancing, many people are organizing online using Google spreadsheets, Google forms, public posts on Twitter and Facebook, and private messages on social media platforms.

There is great beauty and power in this support, but it also puts security concerns in the spotlight: overlooked privacy settings and overbroad collection of personal data can lead to the unintended disclosure of private information that can be used to harm the very people seeking help. We’ll go over over some security considerations to keep in mind whether you’re organizing, or taking part in, these vast and important efforts. EFF's Rory Mir will moderate this mutual aid discussion with EFF staff (Eva Galperin, nash Sheard and Ben Elam) and special guest Sherry Wong.

2:30-2:45: Intermission:

Reality Thief Brad Barton will perform—and we promise it will be magical.

2:45-3:30: What’s Next for .ORG and Nonprofits?

Six months ago, ICANN’s approval of the sale of the .ORG registry to private equity firm Ethos Capital seemed like a done deal that would be rammed through with relatively little attention or protest. Instead, through a ton of hard and creative work, we’ve helped mobilize overwhelming opposition in the non-profit sector, built a powerful and diverse coalition, sparked investigations from the states and Congress, and generated media coverage of a fairly complex, arcane Internet-governance-related subject.

This fight has been especially important during this pandemic, when many nonprofits around the world are heavily reliant on their websites to interact with people. After several delays and thanks to the incredible pressure from EFF and hundreds of nonprofit partners, ICANN made their decision: .ORG is not up for grabs. We’ll be exploring the question: What’s next for nonprofits and other .ORG registrant users? EFF's Karen Gullo will moderate this .org discussion with Mitch Stoltz, Katharine Trendacosta, and Cara Gagliano.
