EFF submitted a FOIA request to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), an interagency law enforcement training center run by the Department of Homeland Security. EFF requested all information, training materials, and presentations for FLETC's Mobile Device Investigations Program.

In response, EFF recieved over 2,000 pages of records describing tools used by law enforcement to conduct investigations using mobile devices, including techniques for extracting data, geolocation techniques, and the law governing access to this information.

In May 2012, Customs and Border Protection released approximately 80 pages of records relating to the agency's use of data extraction devices.
