Seth Schoen, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, notes we hear of companies being hacked almost weekly - so the more data gathered and stored, the greater the risk from breaches. (That also applies to the likes of Google accounts, where browsing history, email contacts and financial information can be held.)

He adds, ''As we come to program computers in cleverer ways, they will have literally superhuman abilities to make inferences from a thousand things that human beings have completely forgotten. A lot of these things may relate to very sensitive information, such as our relationships, diseases and beliefs.''
