S.T.O.P. -a local organization in the Electronic Frontier Alliance, (not EFF) will host this event:

The Power and Peril of Geolocation Data

From the Organizers:

On Sunday March 7th, at 2;00 pm ET, join us for this interactive session on the power and peril of geolocation data. In this session, we will explore the growing power of geolocation data, enabling tracking of thousands, even millions of people at a time. We will explain the existing ways that geolocation data is captured by apps, devices, and network operators, and how it's sold to advertisers and other commercial counterparties.

Then, we will explore the ways that law enforcement agencies are weaponizing this data to track, arrest, and deport New Yorkers, particularly members of BIPOC communities. We will also examine growing efforts at the state and local level to ban this type of surveillance.

This session is held as part of NY Open Data Week.
