Description:

Virtual reality and augmented reality technologies (VR/AR) are rapidly becoming more prevalent to a wider audience. This technology provides the promise to entertain and educate, to connect and enhance our lives, and even to help advocate for our rights. But it also raises the risk of eroding them online. This session will bring together experts working on Augmented/Virtual Reality with advocates working on human rights to strategize on how the digital rights community can advance a human rights-based design in the context of augmented and virtual reality. It will begin with brief remarks from Katitza Rodriguez, Avi Bar Zeev, and Kent Bye to get all participants on the same page, and will continue with facilitated smaller break-out group discussions focusing on law enforcement access to data, content moderation, "avatars, and virtual agents," and biometrics.

Facilitators:

Law Enforcement Access to Potential Evidence & Surveillance

Biometric Inferences and Mental Privacy

"Avatars and Virtual Agents"

Content Moderation
