The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is now accepting applications for its 2021-2023 Frank Stanton Fellowship. Applicants should be recent law school graduates or law students who will be graduating no later than Spring 2021, and have an interest in developing an expertise in First Amendment issues implicated by new technologies. 

The fellow will work side-by-side EFF’s staff attorneys for two years on our active civil liberties litigation docket with the goal of developing a deep grounding in cutting-edge free speech law, and related issues in communications privacy and technology law. Non-litigation responsibilities may include advocacy, public speaking, blogging, media appearances, and work on legislative and regulatory matters related to surveillance and law enforcement. The fellow will not work on EFF’s Intellectual Property docket.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be attending or have earned a Juris doctor degree from a United States law school and either be licensed to practice law in the US or planning to take a US state bar exam prior to October 2021.
  • Committed to defending freedom of speech. 
  • Good communication skills including strong writing and analytical skills. 
  • Ability to be self-motivated and focused. 
  • An interest in working with a team of highly motivated lawyers and activists in a hard-working nonprofit environment.
  • Tech savviness and a familiarity with high tech public interest issues is not required; but applicants should be curious to learn more about those areas. 
  • Must demonstrate care and respect toward coworkers, outside partners, members of the public, donors, and others with whom this role interacts.
  • Must work to positively and collaboratively resolve conflicts and overcome challenges
  • Must be able to understand and articulate with accuracy EFF’s mission, positions, and work.
  • Must be available and responsive to colleagues, outside partners and others over email, phone, and online chat, with the ability to respond and reliably to time-sensitive requests for assistance and opportunities during agreed upon working hours.
