California lawmakers Tuesday sent to the governor a privacy measure that would require state law enforcement officials to get a search warrant before asking service providers to turn over their customers’ emails and social media messages.

S.B. 467, which was proposed by state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, and sponsored by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, cleared the state Assembly floor Monday on a 73-3 vote.
