Washington state is halting its defense of a landmark law requiring online companies to verify the ages of people posting ads offering “adult services.”

A federal judge blocked implementation of the law in June, in suits brought by the Internet Archive and Village Voice Media — the operator of Backpage.com. The suits, being litigated by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, claimed the measure violated the First Amendment and the Communications Decency Act of 1996.
