AOL paid Drudge to make his website available to its customers and published his defamatory article. Victims sued both AOL for hosting the website and Drudge for publishing the content. The Court held that CDA 230 was meant to immunize web hosts from exactly this kind of liability since AOL had no hand in creating the offensive content.
